How do I change the type of Florida license plate I have?

Changing the type of Florida license plate you have can be done in person at any tag or tax collector's office. You can request this change at any time throughout the year, you do not have to wait until your registation is up for renewal. A standard Florida license plate is referred to as an “RGS” or Sunshine State plate. For an additional annual fee you may upgrade to either one or a combination of the following:

  • Specialty License Plate: The State of Florida offers over 100 specialty license plates which represent different organizations. Examples include: “University of Florida”, “Miami Heat”, “Save the Manatee” and “Salutes Firefighter”. The annual fee for these specialty plates ranges from $25.00 - $28.00 with the money raised going directly to the organization listed.

  • Personalized License Plates: These may be either standard RGS or specialty plates in which the letters and/or numbers are customized by the vehicle owner. Examples might include: “EDU C8”, “DOG LVR” or “CWBY FAN”. Personalized plates must be applied for using HSMV Form 83043 and cost an additional $15.00 per year.

  • Military Plates: Florida offered military plates free of additional fee for individuals who have served our county. Examples of these include: “Medal of Honor”, “World War II” and “Navy Cross.” Application for Florida Military License Plates must be applied for in person or by submitting an application in writing to the DMV by mail.
